Facts and Tips

An open garbage stored under the sink can be a magnet for flies, ants, rodents and roaches.

Food that is not sealed tightly can attract "pantry pests" such as roaches and rodents.

Common Household Pests

  • Ants
  • Ants are social insects, related to wasps and bees. There are more that 12,000 species of ants classified today. Ants form colonies ranging in size from a few tens to large highly organised colonies. Ant colonies can be made up of predatory individuals: groups that are made up "workers" or "soldiers". Ants have made colonies on almost every landmass on Earth.

  • Flies
  • True flies are an insect that possess a single pair of wings. It is estimated there are over 240,000 species including mosquitos, gnats and midges. Mosquitos in particular act as disease transmitters, being vectors for malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, yellow fever, encephalitis and other infectious diseases. Flies produce maggots, which in nature are a very important part of growth. The refuse that maggots consumer and break down help to promote the growth of plant life. Unfortunately, maggots can attract unwanted carnivorous reptiles or birds.

  • Roaches
  • There are more than 4,000 species of Roach, of those 30 species are associated with human habitations, and about four species are well known as pests. The American cockrach is among the best-known pest species, measuring about 30 millimetres long. Tropical cockroaches are often much bigger. Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces and emit airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. Other cockroaches will follow these trails to discover sources of food and water. Group or swarm behavior emerges from a simple set of individual cockroach interactions.

  • Ticks
  • Ticks are a form of small arachnid, along with other mites. Ticks live by hematophagy on the blood of mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. Ticks are vectors of a number of diseases, including Lyme disease and Tick-borne meningoencephalitis and Southern tick-associated rash illness. Ticks are about the size of a sesame seed. Male ticks are black, female ticks have a brick-red abdomen with a black shield-like plate close to their head. Ticks are blood-feeding parasites which are often found in tall grass and shrubs. Some species of tick will actively stalk the host by foot, requiring physical contact as there only means of attaching to a host..

  • Silverfish
  • Silvefish, fishmoth or urban silverfish is a small wingless insect typically measuring from a half to one inch. The silverfish's diet of carbohydrates such as sugar or starches. The species is estimated to have existed for over 300 million years. Silverfish can cause damage to books, tapestries, and textiles. Silverfish can also feed on cotton, linen, silk and synthetic fibers; sometimes they will even attack leatherware and synthetic fibers. The presence of silverfish can attract predators such as earwigs, house centipedes, and in rare cases spiders..

  • Rats
  • Rats are various medium sized, long-tailed rodents. "True rats" typically recognized by humans are the black rat, and the brown rat. Rats are distinguished from mice by their size; rats are generally large rodents, while mice are generally small rodents. The Black Plague is traditionally believed to have been caused by a micro-organism, carried by the Tropical Rat Flea which preyed on Rats living in European cities of the day; these rats were victims of the plague themselves. Modern wild rats can carry some "zoonotic" conditions (can be transferred across species such as humans), however these conditions in fact are rarely found. The normal lifespan of rats ranges from two to five years, and is typically three years.

  • Mites
  • Earwigs are characterized by membranous wings folded underneath short leathery forewings (hence the literal name "skin wings"). Earwigs are predisposed to hiding in warm humid crevices and as such may crawl into a human ear canal. Though not where they are frequently found, many other languages have words based on the same premise for this insect. Earwigs can be considered in some ways a beneficial part of the garden, in-that they prey on other insects, but they become a nuisence because of their habit of positioning themselves within leaves and feeding on soft plant tissues.

  • Earwigs
  • Mites are among the most diverse and successful of all the intervertebrate groups, which have exploited an incredible array of habitats. There are a large number of Mite species that live as parasites on plants, animals, and some that feed on mold. Sarcoptic mMange mites are among the species that attack animals, and burrow under the skin. Mites cause several forms of allergic diseases, including hay fever, asthma and eczema. Mites are usually found in warm and humid locations, including beds. Dust mite allergens are thought to be among the heaviest dust allergens.

  • Spiders
  • Spiders are air-breathing and have eight legs. About 40,000 species have been identified. Most spiders are predatory, mostly preying on insects and on other spiders. While most spider venom does not affect humans, a few species of spider's venom is dangerous to humans. Female spiders lay up to 3,000 eggs in one or more silk egg sacs, which maintain a fairly constant humididty level and can hatch without the presence or attention of the female spider. A few species of spiders build webs together in large colonies and show social behavior, in colonies of up to 50,000 individuals. Most spiders will only bite humans in self-defense, and few produce worse effects than a mosquito bite or bee-sting. Most of those with medically serious bites, such as recluse spiders and widow spiders, are shy and bite only when they feel threatened. A strong defense against spider bite is avoidance.

  • Mice
  • Fleas are a small wingless insect, and are external parasites living by hematophagy off the blood of mammals and birds. Fleas are adapted to feeding on the blood of their hosts, jumping from host to host (vertically up to seven inches; horizontally thirteen inches. Its tough body is is able to withstand great pressure, likely an adaptation to avoid scratching. Flea reproduce by laying eggs in batches of 20 or so, usually on the host itself, which easily roll onto the ground. Eggss and developing fleas can have a primary habitat on surfaces where the host rests and sleeps. Fleas can survive two months to a year between meals, but adult fleas must feed on blood to reproduce. Female fleas can lay 500 or more eggs over their life, allowing for phenomenal growth rates.

  • Fleas
  • A mouse (plural mice) is a small animal that belongs to one of numerous species of rodents. The average lifespan of a mouse in the wild is only about 4 months, primarily becase of heavy predation by cats, wild dogs, foxes, birds of prey and snakes. Mice can cause damage to and eat crops, and spread disease through their parasites and feces. Mice breed year round, with an onset of breeding at about 50 days of age in both females and males. The average gestation period is 20 days, and pups are weaned at 3 weeks of age.

The OrganiX Greener IPM

A good IPM strategy involves many methods of controlling pests in a given environment. Each method is used to complement the other, with a primary goal of reducing the reliance on chemical or synthetic pesticides.

We make it our goal to reduce the need for chemicals. While preventing the spread of many common household pests can start in the home; our strategy also involves disrupting pest' growth.

Pests can make there home in your building or lawn and spread quickly. The strategy we use involves identifying the affected-areas and discerning key areas to intervene.

What are "Least Toxic" pesticides?

Least toxic pesticides are organic and biological insecticides, which can be botanically-derived or originate from plant material. Some least toxic pesticides are boric acid, diatomaceous earth, microbe-based insecticides and silica gels.

Certain organically originated insecticdes cause paralysis and death to pests upon contact. Many least toxic insecticides, that have been around for centuries and taken from plants, are safe for humans and wildlife.

What does this mean for my home or building?

Because our IPM strategy is aimed at reducing the need for chemical and synthetic pesticides, using Least Toxic Options is a "greener" alternative. We can effectively break-up the spread of pests and form a preventive barrier, protecting your home or building.
